Almon is receptive to many realms of experience, envisioning transplant surgery, power grids, cosmology, personal and literary history, an updated version of the Seven Deadly Sins, turn-of-the-century Moon Towers, the Gutenberg Bible, meteor showers, the legend of St. Cuthbert saved by sea otters, and a ride of one-armed Hells Angels. There may be nothing new under the sun, but there are many curious things beneath it nevertheless. These poems read the everyday with sharp lenses: a first haircut in a Southern barbershop, an Armageddon at Endiang, Alberta, and an encounter with a mortician who wanted to be a cartoonist.

Curiosity does not exclude empathy: Almons muse describes two elderly men sqabbling over a dropped coin in a secondhand store and pays a visit to the grave of Sylvia Plath to hear a song from one mouth/transformed in another. There is no hesitation before life in this book.
