While Christian armies in France marched on Crusade against brother Christians and English armies sought to destroy Welsh independence, armies of sculptors, painters and glaziers transformed that world with their creations.

When elderly Brother Dafydd told fifteen-year-old Rhiannon about the saints’ faces in the great west window in Valle Crucis abbey, astonishment was hardly the word for her reaction. They formed the story of his life as he had told it to her: his betrayed lover Jehan, his mentor Brother Bernard, his enemy Simon, his friend Brother Owain. And inexplicably, there was her own face, though she had just met him. And now that he was dead and she had broken her holy vows, where did that leave her?Told by seven narrators, the novel examines the complex relationships among love, beauty, art, spirituality and sexual passion.

It follows Dafydd from his childhood on the Welsh-English border to his coming of age in France, and through his life’s work as a glazier. He creates stained glass windows for French abbeys and churches and the English cathedrals at Wells and Salisbury, struggling with the limitations of social class, ethnic hostility, religious orthodoxy and his own skills. Caught up in the currents of medieval history swirling around him, he is cut off from his lover and their child, accused of heresy and banished. Dafydd’s life emerges in the words of those who loved and hated him: Bernard, Owain, Simon, his mother Winifred and two teenagers, his sickly half-brother Edward and the passionate and brutalized Iveta. And it is Rhiannon who has not only the first and the final words, but whose mind and whose story provide the keys to the novels theme.
